About the cemetery

Character and history

Düsseldorf’s third-largest cemetery lies beside Volksgarten. Mature trees, a listed chapel, special urn areas and the Dutch war-grave cemetery create distinct destinations. A giant sequoia stands in urn section 28 A/B.

Planning began in 1876 and the cemetery opened in 1879. Twelve geometric sections organised the original 17 hectares; the 1894 extension introduced curved paths. Johannes Radke designed the chapel, built in 1910. Burials resumed after an interruption from 1940 to 1945.
